It was Taming the Star Runner by S.E. Hinton and I initially picked it because Horses, although it’s not technically about the horses; Star Runner is an allegory for Travis, the protagonist. A 1989 article from the NY Times didn’t find the symbolism to be successful, but I disagree. Travis and the Star Runner are both wild, out of control, and alone. While this seems to suit the horse, Travis longs for companionship, and he feels like no one knows who he truly is. We don’t see a whole lot of growth for Travis throughout the story, but the book ends on a hopeful note with Travis finally finding security in his home and his family, and even somewhat in his future. I found the book to be incredibly inspiring. Travis’ motivation to make a better life for himself motivates me.
